Couples Therapy with Talkspace: Our Journey

My husband and I have been together for 14 years, raising three children while caring for our youngest, who faces ongoing health challenges. In-person couples therapy didn't fit our busy schedule, so we eagerly embraced the opportunity to explore virtual therapy with Talkspace.

The sign-up process was simple and straightforward. We answered questions about our relationship, the main issues we wanted to address, and our preferred payment method. It was great that Talkspace accepted my UnitedHealthcare insurance, which significantly reduced the cost.

Talkspace offers various communication channels, including live sessions (video, audio, or chat) and a messaging feature. Initially, we used live chat sessions but later switched to video, which felt more productive and engaging.

Our first few chat sessions were a bit awkward, as we struggled to convey our thoughts in text. However, our therapist showed patience and guided us through the process. In our following video session, we explored our parenting styles and established guidelines for handling disagreements.

Pros of Using Talkspace:

  • Quick scheduling: We had our first appointment within a few days.
  • Helpful tips and guidelines for making the most of therapy.
  • Diverse communication options: chat, phone, video, and messaging.
  • Flexibility to change therapists if needed.
  • Acceptance of various major insurance plans.

Cons of Using Talkspace:

  • No private chat room outside the shared therapy room.
  • Limited to one therapist option at a time.
  • Cancellation requires a 24-hour notice, or you're charged.
  • Challenges in expressing thoughts effectively in the chat room without video.
  • Some therapists have less than a year of experience.

Despite these drawbacks, my husband and I had a positive experience with Talkspace and intend to continue using the service. Our therapist was professional and attentive, and the video sessions were particularly beneficial.

Our positive experience aligns with the sentiments of many Talkspace users. A survey involving 105 users revealed:

  • 83% were satisfied or very satisfied with their experience.
  • 92% rated their therapist's qualifications as excellent or good.
  • 78% felt that most or all of their needs were met.
  • 82% would recommend Talkspace to others.

Overall, we are among the majority of Talkspace users who are satisfied with the platform and plan to continue using it to strengthen our relationship.
