Enlisting in the military involves a comprehensive process that includes disclosing medical and mental health information. Individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may encounter additional considerations during the enlistment process.

Understanding ADHD

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) defines ADHD as a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention and/or hyperactive-impulsive behaviors that impair daily functioning. It often has a genetic basis, and symptoms tend to persist throughout an individual's life, although they can manifest differently at different stages.

Types of ADHD Symptoms:

  1. Inattentive Symptoms:

    • Difficulty paying attention to details or making careless mistakes
    • Struggling to maintain attention during tasks or activities
    • Inability to follow through on instructions or finish tasks
    • Disorganization and difficulty managing time
    • Avoidance of tasks requiring mental effort
    • Frequent misplacing objects
    • Easily distracted by irrelevant stimuli
    • Forgetfulness in daily activities
  2. Hyperactive-Impulsive Symptoms:

    • Fidgeting or excessive movement with hands or feet
    • Leaving one's seat at inappropriate times
    • Excessive running or climbing in inappropriate situations
    • Inability to engage in activities quietly
