What is a Tension Headache?

A tension headache is the most common type of headache, affecting up to 78% of the population at some point in their lives. It is characterized by a feeling of pressure or tightness in the head, and typically lasts for 30 minutes to several hours.

Causes of Tension Headaches

The exact cause of tension headaches is unknown, but it is believed to be related to muscle tension in the head and neck. Some common triggers for tension headaches include:

  • Prescription medications, such as muscle relaxants or tricyclic antidepressants
  • Non-pharmacological treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, biofeedback, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness

There are several things you can do to help prevent tension headaches, including:

  • Managing stress
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Avoiding caffeine and alcohol
  • Practicing good posture
  • Using relaxation techniques
