Why We Chose It

BetterHelp is an online mental health therapy company that offers individual, teen, and couples therapy, as well as psychiatry services. The company uses a subscription-based model that allows you to communicate with your therapist via text, audio, and video messaging. You can also schedule live video sessions or phone calls (if you subscribe to the premium plan). BetterHelp offers psychiatry services as well (though it is not able to prescribe the controlled substances that are often used to treat ADHD).

Our Experience

We asked eight people from Indiana, South Dakota, California, North Carolina, Minnesota, New York, Florida, and Ohio to test BetterHelp. Our testers have all been diagnosed with ADHD, so we were able to get a good sense of how well BetterHelp is able to treat this condition.

Our testers all appreciated the flexibility and convenience of BetterHelp’s services, which were especially helpful to those with ADHD. They also liked the fact that there was a wide range of therapists to choose from and that they could easily switch therapists if they didn’t feel like they were a good fit.

One thing our testers found particularly helpful was the ability to message their therapists between sessions. This allowed them to get support and feedback in real time, which can be especially helpful when dealing with the challenges of ADHD. Our testers also appreciated the fact that their therapists were knowledgeable about ADHD and were able to provide them with strategies and techniques for managing their symptoms.

In addition to trying BetterHelp’s services ourselves, we also surveyed 112 users of the company to understand their general experience. Seventy-two percent of respondents rated BetterHelp as good, very good, or excellent overall, and 78% felt the same about their therapist’s qualifications. Seventy-nine percent of users were able to find a provider who met most or all of their needs, while 76% said they would recommend BetterHelp to a friend or someone like them. Twenty-three percent of users turned to BetterHelp specifically for help with ADHD.
