ADHD Symptoms in Girls vs. Boys:

Boys:

  • Hyperactive/impulsive or combined type presentation
  • Externalizing symptoms such as acting out and being aggressive
  • Hyperactivity or impulsivity, such as constantly moving, interrupting others, and engaging in physical actions at inappropriate times.

Girls:

  • Inattentive ADHD
  • Inattention, such as not paying attention, not listening, being easily distracted, and losing focus
  • Other symptoms, such as being withdrawn, disorganized, unmotivated, shy, and getting easily upset

Reasons Boys are More Likely to be Diagnosed with ADHD than Girls:

  • Boys' symptoms are more disruptive.
  • Girls' symptoms are often seen as personality characteristics.
