Friday Fix: Episode 179
When facing workplace stress, it's tempting to believe that developing mental strength is the sole solution. Similarly, addressing anxiety might seem like a matter of increased meditation. However, sometimes, resolving these issues requires environmental changes rather than solely relying on inner strength.
Here are simple environmental adjustments that can foster mental strength and preserve existing strength:
Cultivate a Nurturing Space: Create an environment filled with elements that inspire joy, comfort, and inspiration. This could include photographs of loved ones, artwork, or plants.
Declutter and Organize: A cluttered environment can lead to a cluttered mind. Dedicate time to declutter your living and working spaces to feel more organized and focused.
Control Your Digital Realm: Manage your digital environment by setting limits on screen time, disabling notifications, and unfollowing or muting those who negatively impact your self-esteem.
Surround Yourself with Positivity: Spend time with supportive and uplifting individuals. Avoid people who are negative or emotionally draining.
Connect with Nature's Embrace: Studies have shown that spending time in nature reduces stress and uplifts moods. Take walks in parks, go hiking, or simply relax outdoors to enjoy fresh air.
Establish a Healthy Routine: Routines provide a sense of stability and control. Establish a routine that includes consistent bedtimes, wake times, healthy meals, and regular exercise.
Why Focus on Environmental Adjustments?
Mental energy is finite, and expending it on combating an unhealthy environment is not ideal. While some mistakenly believe that harsh environments foster resilience, a nurturing environment is key to developing inner strength.
To set yourself up for success, recognize that your surroundings significantly impact your mental health. Sometimes, creating an environment that promotes personal growth and strength is the best path to feeling better.
