Friday fix:
When we are faced with a crisis, our bodies and our minds gear up to deal with the challenge. Then, when the crisis is resolved, we go back into our normal state of being.
Our bodies were not meant to stay in a heightened state of alert over a long period of time. So when a crisis does not end quickly enough, we grow exhausted and get what is referred to as crisis fatigue.
The pandemic is an example of a prolonged crisis that has caused many people to develop crisis fatigue. It causes a wide range of physical and mental symptoms that can interfere with your daily life.
Of course, the pandemic isn't the only situation some people are facing. There are a variety of other issues dominating the headlines right now that have caused heated debates and outright panic.
As a result, many people are going to be experiencing crisis fatigue in the coming weeks and months--even if they didn't get it from the pandemic.
And while you can't always take actions to resolve a situation, you can take steps to manage how you respond to it.
If you've developed crisis fatigue, you are not alone. It is important to note that crisis fatigue does not mean you are insensitive, you lack resilience, or you've done anything wrong. It simply means your body and your mind are having trouble coping with an extended state of distress--which is normal.
On today's episode of The Verywell World Podcast, I share a science-backed technique that can help you manage crisis fatigue.
