The 12 Steps of Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a worldwide fellowship that offers a path to recovery from drug addiction through a 12-step program. These steps, adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), provide a framework for individuals to overcome addiction and achieve lasting recovery.

  1. Admitting Powerlessness: Recognizing that addiction has taken control of one's life and that willpower alone cannot overcome it.

  2. Belief in a Higher Power: Developing faith in a power greater than oneself that can restore sanity and provide strength during recovery.

  3. Surrendering Control: Relinquishing control of one's life to a higher power, trusting in its guidance and protection.

  4. Taking Personal Inventory: Conducting a thorough self-examination to identify and understand personal strengths, weaknesses, and behaviors contributing to addiction.

  5. Confessing Wrongdoings: Acknowledging and admitting past wrongs and harmful actions caused by addiction to God, oneself, and another human being.

  6. Readiness for Change: Expressing willingness to have character defects removed and to embrace a new way of life free from addiction.

  7. Asking for Help: Humbly seeking divine assistance in overcoming character flaws and shortcomings that hinder recovery.

  8. Making Amends: Creating a list of individuals harmed by past actions and taking steps to make amends wherever possible, except where such amends would cause further harm.

  9. Continuing Personal Inventory: Maintaining vigilance in self-awareness and promptly admitting when wrong, regularly taking inventory of one's behavior and attitudes.

  10. Seeking Spiritual Connection: Cultivating a conscious relationship with a higher power through prayer, meditation, and other spiritual practices.

  11. Praying for Guidance: Seeking divine guidance and wisdom in understanding God's will and gaining the strength to carry it out.

  12. Carrying the Message: Sharing the experience, strength, and hope gained through recovery with others struggling with addiction, actively participating in the fellowship by supporting and guiding newcomers.

NA meetings provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can come together to share experiences, offer encouragement, and work through the 12 steps. The program emphasizes the importance of connecting with a higher power and building a strong community of support in achieving lasting recovery.
