Warning Signs of Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse, encompassing physical violence to emotional manipulation, can affect anyone irrespective of gender, race, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. Identifying potential signs of domestic abuse is crucial for providing support and seeking assistance.

1. Physical Signs:

  • Visible injuries such as bruises, cuts, black eyes, busted lips, sprains, fractures, torn clothing, walking/sitting difficulties, frequent headaches/stomachaches, fatigue, sleep disturbances, weight changes, and appetite alterations.

2. Emotional Signs:

  • Anxiety, depression, fear, guilt, shame, isolation, withdrawal from social engagements, difficulty concentrating, sleeping, or making decisions, suicidal thoughts, self-blame, diminished self-esteem, dependency, and trust issues.

3. Behavioral Signs:

  • Avoidance of social situations, frequent cancellations or lateness, unexplained absences from work or school, frequent job or residence changes, financial difficulties, borrowing or stealing money, substance abuse, and risky behaviors.

4. Controlling Behavior:

  • Isolating the victim from loved ones, monitoring activities, controlling finances, making unilateral decisions, dictating clothing, speech, or actions, humiliating/belittling, issuing threats, and using physical violence.
