Friday Fix: Episode 173

Change is a process that unfolds over time, rather than happening overnight. Our brains need to recognize a problem and the cost of maintaining the status quo before we take action.

Change doesn't end with the initial action. Many people start a goal but give up soon after due to perceived difficulty or lack of perceived progress.

Understanding the phases of change can help us make informed decisions about habits we want to break and increase the likelihood that the changes will be sustainable.

This understanding can also enhance our relationships. When you understand how change works, you can better help others create change in their lives.

The Six Stages of Change

  1. Precontemplation: Unaware of a problem or unwilling to change.
  2. Contemplation: Recognizing a problem and considering change.
  3. Preparation: Taking steps to prepare for change.
  4. Action: Actively making changes.
  5. Maintenance: Sustaining the changes over time.
  6. Relapse: Returning to old behaviors.

How to Use Them to Your Own Transformation

  1. Be Patient: Change takes time.
  2. Set Realistic Goals: Don't try to change everything at once.
  3. Find Support: Having someone to encourage you can make a big difference.
  4. Don't Give Up: Everyone experiences setbacks. The key is not to give up.

How to Help Someone Else Create Change in Their Life

  1. Be Understanding: Accept that people change at their pace.
  2. Offer Support: Let the person know you're there for them.
  3. Be Patient: Don't expect them to change overnight.
  4. Encourage Them: Help them stay motivated and focused.
