Race and Social Justice

According to Merriam-Webster, race is "a category of humankind that shares certain distinctive physical traits." However, the concept of race is complex and contested. There's no single, definitive definition of race, and it's been used throughout history to promote discrimination and oppression.

Typically, race is linked to physical traits such as hair texture and skin color. But, these traits aren't always reliable indicators of race. People with similar complexions or hair textures may be classified as belonging to different races. Additionally, definitions of race have changed over time and vary from place to place.

In the United States, race has been used to categorize people into distinct groups, often based on skin color. This categorization has been used to justify discrimination and oppression, including slavery, segregation, and racial profiling.

At its core, the concept of race is a social construct that has been used to justify discrimination and oppression. It's crucial to challenge the idea that race is a biological reality and recognize it as a social construct that has been used to divide people.

We need to work towards a fairer and more just society where everyone is treated equally, regardless of their race or ethnicity. We must continue to work to dismantle the systems of racism and oppression that still exist in our society.
