Online Therapy Review Methodology

At Verywell Mind, we understand that finding quality mental healthcare can be challenging. That's why we're dedicated to providing comprehensive and objective reviews of online therapy companies. Our goal is to equip individuals seeking mental health support with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about the services available to them.

Our evaluation process involves three main components: company research, user surveys, and testing.

1. Company Research:

  • Questionnaire: We distributed a comprehensive questionnaire to 55 online therapy companies, covering aspects such as founding, services, hiring practices, pricing, and therapist expertise. This allowed representatives to share their perspectives and answer specific questions.

  • Data Collection: Our team conducted extensive research on each company, verifying information provided through the questionnaire and gathering additional insights. We examined company websites, news articles, reviews, and reputational data.

  • Expert Assessment: Our panel of subject matter experts, including licensed therapists and mental health editors, reviewed the collected data and provided their professional assessments.

2. User Survey:

  • Participant Selection: We surveyed 105 users from each of the 55 companies, resulting in a total of 5,775 responses.

  • Survey Questions: Participants answered 92 questions about their experiences with each company, covering topics such as satisfaction, ease of use, therapist qualifications, inclusivity, and value for money.

  • Results Analysis: We analyzed the survey data to understand user perceptions and experiences with each online therapy service.

3. Testing:

  • Service Evaluation: Our team signed up for and tested 43 out of the 55 companies. We experienced the services firsthand, evaluating features, communication methods, therapist matching, and overall user experience.

  • Tester Notes: Our testers shared their experiences and insights with our expert panel, which contributed to the final scoring and assessment.

Scoring and Assessment:

Our evaluation process resulted in a comprehensive assessment of each company's performance across nine key areas:

  1. Company Reputation: We considered media coverage, user feedback, and any potential controversies or investigations.

  2. Company Reach: We assessed the company's ability to provide services to diverse areas and meet the growing demand for mental health care.

  3. User Satisfaction: We analyzed survey data and tester experiences to understand overall user satisfaction and likelihood to recommend the service.

  4. User Friendliness and Convenience: We evaluated the website's design, sign-up process, customer service, therapist matching, and communication options.

  5. Pricing and Insurance: We compared pricing models, subscription options, pay-per-session fees, and insurance coverage options.

  6. Types of Therapy Services Offered: We considered the range and quality of therapy modalities, including individual, couples, group, and specialized services.

  7. Therapist Qualifications: We examined therapist credentials, education, diversity, and specialized training. We also assessed staff turnover rates.

  8. Cultural Sensitivity: We evaluated the company's commitment to serving diverse populations, including marginalized communities, and their efforts to match users with culturally competent therapists.

  9. Privacy Policies: We reviewed the company's privacy practices and security measures to ensure the protection of user data.

Based on these assessments, we assigned star ratings to each company, reflecting their overall performance in each category.

Our team at Verywell Mind is committed to providing accurate and up-to-date information to help individuals make informed decisions about their mental health. We strive to maintain transparency in our review process and welcome any feedback or questions from our readers.
