Reclaiming Disability Power with Cannabis: My Journey

My path towards embracing cannabis as a tool for reclaiming power over my disability has been a winding one, shaped by years of internalized stigma and the complexities of my South Asian cultural heritage. Growing up in an environment influenced by war on drugs propaganda, I initially held reservations and apprehensions about cannabis use. However, chronic migraines and relentless sleep issues prompted me to reconsider as I sought relief from the pain and fatigue that plagued my daily existence.

The concept of access intimacy, introduced by Mia Mingus, resonated deeply with me. Her framework emphasized understanding and meeting accessibility needs, offering a pathway to embrace cannabis as a means of enhancing my quality of life. My partner became the catalyst for my initial foray into cannabis, his support and understanding unwavering as I ventured into trying CBD edibles to ease my sleep problems.

However, financial constraints and limited availability of certain cannabis products initially hindered my progress. A missed freelance opportunity served as a wake-up call, forcing me to confront internalized ableism and the barriers preventing me from accessing potential benefits of cannabis. Recognizing that my disability should not dictate my access to relief and empowerment, I resolved to overcome my apprehension.

Armed with my partner's product recommendations, I embarked on a journey of exploration, carefully navigating various forms and dosages of cannabis to find the optimal combination to suit my needs. A balance of CBD and THC provided significant relief from pain, sleep issues, and anxiety, allowing me to function more effectively and reclaim a sense of control over my body and well-being.

Reflecting on my transformative experience with cannabis, I recognize the significance of shedding the shame and stigma associated with its use. As a mental health therapist, I understand the profound impact of negative perceptions in preventing individuals from accessing resources that could enhance their lives.

My story aims to inspire others, especially marginalized communities who often face barriers in accessing adequate healthcare and support. By sharing my personal journey, I hope to challenge preconceived notions and foster open dialogue about cannabis as a potential resource for empowerment and resilience in the face of disability.

As someone who identifies as a fat, brown, queer, immigrant woman and settler on Turtle Island, I am acutely aware of the systemic injustices and discrimination pervasive in our society. My experiences with cannabis have illuminated the power of reclaiming one's narrative, challenging oppressive norms, and finding pride and liberation within disability.

While broader societal factors may remain largely beyond my control, cannabis has emerged as a source of agency and resilience, allowing me to navigate the complexities of my disability, assert my right to well-being, and pursue a fulfilling life.
