Have you ever let someone make you feel bad about yourself? Have you let someone break promises to you over and over again? Have you put up with someone treating you poorly?
If so, you're not alone. Most people have let someone mistreat them at some point in their lives.
Now, I'm not saying you should let anyone mistreat you. For instance, don't just let someone cut in front of you in line without saying anything.
But repeated mistreatment from a friend, family member, colleague, or acquaintance can be a serious problem.
Some mistreatment is very obvious, like someone being rude to you. Other times, mistreatment can be more subtle, like someone giving you a backhanded compliment or trying to make you feel bad about yourself.
While you can't control how other people behave, you can control how you respond to them.
If you've let someone treat you poorly and didn't do anything about it, it's important to think about why.
It could be because you're worried about the other person's reaction or you're afraid they'll stop being in your life. Or, it could be something else entirely.
Understanding why you're letting someone mistreat you is the first step to taking action to stop it.
In this episode of The Verywell Mind Podcast, I explain the top seven reasons why you might let someone mistreat you. I also share how you can take steps to move forward in a healthy way if someone treats you poorly.
